A security guard at a swanky Marina del Rey apartment complex described in court Wednesday how a co-worker pulled a gun and began shooting at his supervisor as they stood face-to-face during a confrontation.
Kofi Bawa testified at the Airport Courthouse in the second day of Byron Keith Street s trial for a 2013 killing . Bawa said Street pulled a small black gun and fired three shots at Patrick Addo Odoikyene,47, who turned and ran to escape the gunfire but died between two Mercedes-Benz cars parked nearby.
30, 2013 shooting at the 500-unit Shores complex at Via Marina and Panae Way occurred about 2:40 a.m.1, when Bawa noticed Street arrive outside the building s front lobby and attempt to take the binders containing their timesheets . Bawa awakened Odoikyene, who was napping on a couch in the lobby, to alert him.
Odoikyene then ran outside to confront Street .
Their boss, Bertin Gnadbe, had earlier ordered Street not to come to work because he had an injured foot.
Patrick said, My friend, what are you doing here ? Kofi, call the police, Bawa recalled during the second day of Street s trial at the Airport courthouse . Street, who had his hands in the pockets of his hooded sweatshirt, pulled out a gun and opened fire, Bawa said.
Bawa said he saw Odoikyene run away, but did not know he was fatally wounded .
Bawa also ran.
Street, who fellow security guards knew as Curtis Boyd,a name he used on a false security guard card and identification to get hired, also fled but was soon arrested . He is charged with murder, burglary, vandalism and using false identification.
Sheriff s deputies testified Tuesday that they found threatening messages scratched into the paint on parked cars at the complex.2 The messages targeted Odoikyene.
Another security guard also testified Tuesday that Odoikyene and Street had an angry confrontation a day earlier, and that he heard Street say he would shoot Odoikyene.
Prosecutors were expected to introduce scientific evidence showing DNA found on the cars matched Street, a 49-year-old Inglewood man.
Deputy Public Defender Samuel Leonard tried to show Bawa lacked credibility because the Ghana native was in the United States illegally . Bawa testified he used a friend s identification to get his security job and did not call the police immediately following the shooting because he was afraid of them.
He reported what he saw the next day.
