The Merseyside Police Press Office told MailOnline that detectives are appealing for information about the violent incident.
Detective Inspector Paul Denn said: ‘This was a particularly nasty assault in the middle of the day, on a man who was just trying to do his job.’
Police said the attack happened after a security guard tried to stop two men from riding their bikes inside the shopping centre.
One of the males then got off his bicycle, pulled the seat off it and began assaulting the security guard.
According to police, both men then left the mall – one on foot and one on his bike – before returning to collect the second bicycle and depart again.
A glass door in the shopping centre was also damaged during the incident.

Detective Inspector Denn said: ‘We are examining CCTV from the centre and shops and would appeal to anyone who was in the Cherry Tree shopping centre around the time of the assault to get in contact.
‘This is a busy shopping centre and we’re sure if you saw these two males on bikes in the centre or witnessed this incident, which happened near to the Flower Flies florist, you would remember it.’
