British club patron punches man into coma over girlfriend

A British night clubber punched another man into a 10-day coma before he calmly walked back to his table and finished his drink, newly released footage showed.

Maxwell Banbury, 19, was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence and community service last week after he admitted to delivering the dance floor punch, which left 29-year-old Andrew Mason with a fractured skull, the North Devon Journal reported.1

I saw him feeling up my girl, Banbury told Fever club staffers as he stormed out of the Barnstaple, Devon, bar after the March attack. Surveillance video did not show Mason near Banbury s girlfriend.

The club s cameras did catch the brutal blow, though. Newly released footage showed Banbury sitting at a club table around 2:30 a.m.

on March 15. He got up socked Mason in the face, knocking him to the ground.

This was a totally unprovoked assault with no justification whatsoever, Phil Lawes from Devon and Cornwall Police told the newspaper.2

As Mason lay on the dance floor, Banbury casually walked away, grabbed his drink from his table and walk away out of the camera s frame, the video showed.

Witnesses think the victim was unconscious when he hit the floor. He was bleeding from the ears and mouth, prosecutor Gordon Richings said in court.

Banbury left the club and told door staff he just touched my girlfriend.

Banbury repeated his reasoning to police, telling investigators he became furious when he thought he saw his girlfriend dancing with Mason.

Mason s skull was fractured during the attack. He suffered internal bleeding and spent 10 days in a coma in the North Devon Hospital s intensive care unit, prosecutors said. Since the attack, Mason said he constantly worried about suffering seizures as a result of the injury.

His life is a living nightmare, he said in a victim impact statement.

Banbury was charged with causing grievous bodily harm. He admitted to the crime and was sentenced to a 16-month suspended jail sentence and 200 hours of community service. He was also ordered to pay about $ 1,500 in compensation.
