London has been left on high alert amid fears that Islamist militants could be planning a terrorist strike1 on New Year’s Eve.

The capital is one of a number of major European cities to reportedly be on added guard after a ‘friendly’ intelligence service has warned of a gun or bomb attack during festive celebrations this week.

It came as Russian authorities warned the country’s citizens to stay at home on New Year’s Eve in order to remain safe.

Four regional armed police units could reportedly be created in the UK in order to help deal with possible terror attacks.

There are fears that there is not sufficient cover for dealing with such major incidents outside of London.

Counter-terrorism chiefs are reportedly in talks with Home Secretary, Theresa May2 about the issue.

The idea is that the police3 units are put on standby around the clock in case an attack takes place.

There has reportedly been a doubling of the number of armed cops on London’s streets at any one time following the Paris terror attacks.

Police recently issued tips and a handy video on how to stay safe during a terror attack4 .
