TERROR ALERT: Security cops considered cancelling the New Year s Eve fireworks in London

Top-level meetings were held by security services and Scotland Yard bosses after a viable threat to the festivities was uncovered by UK intelligence officers.

But the decision-makers decided not to postpone the annual display which would send a message that the terrorists are winning .

Security has instead been beefed up around the river Thames where around half a million people will watch the sky light up at midnight.

An insider revealed: It has been the subject of much debate over the past couple of months.

A lot of experts were consulted who have warned there needs to be a lot more security than we have seen in previous years.

Of course the event is always well manned but extra needs to be done in the wake of the current terror threat, the recent attacks in Paris and the vote to bomb Syria.

“We know London is probably next on the list and it would be an event like this that, if they attacked it, would shock the nation and indeed the world to its core.

It is the perfect environment to create utter chaos.

The annual fireworks display is ticketed this year, with 100,000 people forking out 10 to get a close-up view.

But hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to flock to the banks of the Thames to watch from afar.

Our source added: You have to be wary that all travel on the Tube is free . People can move everywhere, it s going to be busy and the fact no one needs tickets means it s harder to keep track of who is where.

Security has been upped but it s a concern still . The Government will be happy once the event is over .

The decision was taken to continue on in the name of being British.

We can t stop them from making these plans .

All we can do is be vigilant and not let them stop us going about our daily lives.
