Are you concerned about the cost of driving lessons in your county of Bedfordshire? For most of us, cost is often the overriding factor when choosing a driving school.

Driving lessons in Gossard s Green aren t cheap but there are a few ways you can try to save money on your driving tuition, even for getting lessons for free if you try.

Block booking at least 5 or more lessons at a time will often attract a discount per lesson. As with buying most things in quantities, the cheaper they are.

You will find most Bedfordshire driving schools offer a bulk discount, allowing you to book in advance to get a good discount. There s no need to book a date and time for lessons you have purchased in advance, you can simply choose a suitable date and time for you and the instructor. One thing to be aware of, and this is a downside to block booking, is that if for any reason you re not happy with your instructor, then you might be stuck with him/her until you have used up all of your booked lessons.

Our advice here is to take a trial lesson with the instructor and find out if you d be happy with him or her teaching you.

Free lesson tip: When you ring around, ask if they will offer you a free trial lesson. Driving schools are a competitive business and if you ask nicely, some may be prepared to give you a free lesson. I ve seen it done many times, so just ask the worse they can say is no .

Being competent at the practical side of driving is no longer enough to pass your driving test.

You need to have a thorough understanding of the Highway Code1, in readiness for the theory test and any questions the examiner may ask you in addition to the practical test. The Highway Code only costs a few pounds so it s a worthwhile investment. However, if you re really working to a tight budget, you can find a copy at your local library.

There s also free apps available you can download and install on your mobile phone or tablet. Try to read it often in between your driving lessons and also leading up to your date of test.

If you have any questions about what you read in the Highway Code, then by all means ask your driving instructor, that s what they are there for!

After each lesson, it s advisable to note down everything you covered during the lesson. Think about what you learnt, what mistakes were made and how not to make them again.

What went well and what improvements did you make. Keeping a journal of your driving lesson progress will help you remember certain things as your prepare for your big day the driving test.

Obviously, passing your test first time will save you money because you won t need any more lessons if you pass (obvious I know!). However, even if you pass your test, you may still want further lessons to build your confidence.

You will find most driving schools offer advanced driving lessons as well as refresher driving lessons if you need them.

If you are keen to pass or have a small window of opportunity to learn, then having a course of intensive driving lessons2 is probably the best option.

Finally, if you have a friend or family member who has held a full driving license then they can sit with you in a vehicle while you practice your driving. Insurance cover needs to be in place in this case. This option would save you a great deal in but bear in mind that you may not be as well prepared as you otherwise would had you used a qualified driving instructor3.

Learning to drive is an investment in a life skill which opens up a world of opportunities allowing you to be more independent and travel more.

Even it s been a while since you passed your test, you might want to consider a course of refresher driving lessons4 to familiarise yourself with the skills you learnt previously.

Or if you lack the confidence to tackle the motorway, then having some motorway lessons5 is another option.

If you re still suffering with nerves, even after passing your test then taking a course specifically aimed at nervous drivers6 is recommended.

Finally, if you re brimming with confidence upon passing your driving test, then why not consider taking your driving skills further with an advanced driving course7 to equip you with an even better skillset for driving.
