Excited about the ceremony

The last ceremony of 2015 for Victoria Lodge No 4629 was a very special one, especially for one person as he was being initiated and starting his journey in Freemasonry. Stevie Stewart was introduced to his proposer Ian Black by his grandfather Joe Waldron who has known Ian for many years, both being members of Temple Chapter No 1094 meeting in Liverpool.

Joe is also a member of The Lodge of St Andrew No 5053 meeting in Neston on the Wirral and four other members of his lodge came along to witness the initiation ceremony, including the WM of the lodge Graham Arnold. Another friend of Joe s, Ted Murphy of St Oswald No 5170 meeting in Warrington also came to witness the ceremony.

Before the ceremony Stevie, a 21 year old single man from Runcorn who works as a Cyber Security Engineer, said that he was mostly excited about the ceremony and becoming a member of this fine brotherhood, but also had a bit of nervous anticipation.

Following the opening of the lodge by the WM Owen Davies in the McCausland Suite and the transaction of the initial business a knock was heard on the door which signalled the start of Stevie s journey into Freemasonry.

Upon entering the lodge the junior deacon John Baldwin took a firm but friendly hold of Stevie to guide him along the path to become an entered apprentice. This firm but friendly hold that John maintained throughout made Stevie feel at ease and helped him enjoy the ceremony.

Owen conducted the majority of the ceremony very skilfully having only being installed as WM in October and this being his first major ceremony. Matt Baldwin did the observations after Stevie was invested with the badge of a Mason, Frank Parle did the north east corner, the junior warden George Shields explained the working tools of an entered apprentice and the senior warden gave the charge after initiation.

The whole ceremony went very well with everybody performing their part with finesse.

After Owen had closed the lodge all retired to the bar for a celebratory drink before enjoying a magnificent buffet prepared by the hall caterers Sugar and Spice in the Peter W Browne Suite. Following the toast to his health proposed by Ian, Stevie said that he enjoyed the ceremony and thanked the members of Victoria Lodge for accepting him into the lodge and now looks forward to his future in Masonry, working in the community and raising money for charity.

Stevie s grandfather then sang the initiate s song unaccompanied to Stevie, his eldest grandson and first to become a Mason. Following this Widnes Group Chairman Derek Williams presented Stevie with a welcome pack which includes details of how the group is comprised, its member lodges and a group calendar.

An explanatory booklet on the first degree is also included in this pack.

He will receive similar booklets after he has taken the subsequent degrees.
