A bank security guard killed himself in remorse after he shot his son accidentally while cleaning his licensed firearm early Sunday morning . K P Mathew (56) of Kavungal house in Angamaly, turned the gun on himself thinking he had fatally injured his son Manu (21) but, as fate would have it, Manu escaped with a mere flesh wound . He is recovering in hospital after seven stiches to his scalp.

“Mathew who works as a security guard at Federal Bank, was cleaning his double barrel gun at his house around 9am . His son Manu was watching television when the gun went off accidentally . Mathew and Manu were sitting face to face . The bullet graced Manu’s scalp . Hearing the gunshot, neighbours gathered at the house and rushed Manu to hospital . Seeing heavy bleeding on his son’s head, Martin thought the injury was grievous . Entering the house, Mathew locked himself in the bedroom and shot himself under his chin,” police sub-inspector C P Happy said.

Police believe Mathew, who has a gun licence, pulled the trigger with his toe . Pellets from the shot bored holes in the wall of the house.
“Manu was working in a shop after completing his degree and Mathew’s Martin’s daughter is studying for plus two . Mathew worked as a guard for daily wages and his wife is also a daily wage earner .
The incident happened soon after his wife reached home from church after attending Sunday mass,” Joy K A, a panchayat member said.
