A SHOPLIFTER stole two bottles of Joop perfume from a Barnstaple shop by placing the items inside the hood of his jacket. Christopher Paul Reed, 37, of Over Burrow, Westward Ho! appeared before North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday. He pleaded guilty to a charge of theft from a shop. The incident happened on November 9 at Boots in Barnstaple.
Lyndsey Baker, for the prosecution, told the court police had been called after security had recognised Reed after he entered the Boots store. Mrs Baker said: “He placed the items in the hood of his jacket and left the store without offering payment.
“Officers arrested him and he was interviewed. He said he couldn’t fully recollect the incident.”
Mrs Baker said the bottles of perfume were recovered and could be resold.
The court heard that Reed has 49 previous theft related offences to his name. Reed was not represented by a solicitor in court. He described his actions as “foolish”.
He said: “I don’t think anything I say will make any difference.
“I didn’t intend to go shoplifting.”
Reed was told to pay 85 victim surcharge and he was given a four-week curfew with electronic monitoring.
