Online streaming service Netflix is urging its customers to reset their passwords following a data breach. The company has not been hacked itself2 but is warning users who may have been compromised by the release of information from another company.

Hackers3 could use the leaked data to take over Netflix accounts particularly if customers use the same password across different accounts online. According to an email sent to a Netflix customer from Somerset4, the firm uncovered a potential risk to its customers during its “regular security monitoring” checks.

The email added: “While we are unaware of any evidence that your Netflix account has been compromised, we’ve reset your password as a precautionary measure.”

Netflix also “strongly” recommends users change their passwords6 so that they are unique to Netflix. Customers who reuse the same passwords with a number of different accounts online are more at risk and the Netflix website advises against this. According to speculation by internet bloggers, the Netflix warning may be linked to an admission from Yahoo that 500 million of its users had their accounts compromised by a hack in late 2014.

Netflix has 83 million members in more than 190 countries.

On this evidence, it seems it takes good care of them.
