SWINFEN Hall prison and young offenders institution near Lichfield has seen its highest levels of staff sickness in five years.
In 2015/16, staff at the high security prison missed an average of 12.5 working days each due to sickness, the highest number in a year at the prison since at least 2010/11. The average number of days missed at the prison was up 21 per cent from 10.3 in 2014/15, and was 36 per cent higher than the number missed in 2010/11, at 9.2. Also seeing its highest number of missed days in five years was Werrington, a male young offenders institution, where staff took an average of 11 days sick in 2015/16, up from 7.5 in 2014/15.
In 2014/15 and 2015/16 High Security Prisons had the lowest average working days lost per member of staff, 7.4 days in 2015/16, and Young People’s Estate had the highest, 15.2 days. Both public sector prisons and the National Probation Service (NPS) have shown reductions in absence rates from 2014/15 to 2015/16. The greater reduction was in public sector prisons, down 9 per cent from 11.4 days missed on average in 2014/15 to 10.4 in 2015/16, compared to just a 1 per cent fall in the NPS, from 11.9 to 11.7.
