One of Tewkesbury’s biggest employers says it is doing its bit to improve the UK and Australia’s defence, after taking over another firm. L-3 TRL Technology, which makes electronic warfare and cyber security systems at four sites in the town, has acquired Australian defence technology specialist Micreo. The company, to be known as L-3 Micreo, will report directly to L-3 TRL Technology, part of the Integrated Sensor Systems sector in L-3’s Electronic Systems group.

L-3 TRL, which employs 350 people in Tewkesbury and whose turnover for 2015 was 49.5million, specialises in products used by defence organisations across the world to collect and encrypt intelligence. The products include encryption devices that safeguard voice and data communications up to ‘top secret’ and jamming devices that protect military personnel by preventing terrorists and insurgents from detonating IEDs such as roadside bombs. An L-3 TRL company spokesman said: “Crucially, this acquisition will present both businesses with the opportunity to increase our technical capabilities and product range to support the UK and Australian defence and security services with enhanced defence integration capabilities in the future.”
Greg Roberts, its president and chief executive, said: “L-3 TRL specialises in the gathering and protection of intelligence through electronic warfare and cyber products and systems.
The acquisition of Micreo will allow the development of a multi-domestic and indigenous business, building on the strong UK to Australian relationships in defence and security.”

“Micreo not only complements L-3’s increasing portfolio of defence technology capabilities but also increases our presence in Australia and supports a number of opportunities we are currently pursuing.”
Tim Shaw, Micreo’s chief executive, said: “We set out to find a shareholder exit that would enable the business to grow and to look after employee and customer needs as well as satisfy our shareholders.
I’m satisfied that we have achieved those aims and the company will continue to grow and to provide rewarding and interesting work.”
