A convicted murderer who violently mugged and killed a mother three decades ago has gone on the run from a Derbyshire open prison. Darren Jackson absconded from HMP Sudbury yesterday morning. The 51-year-old was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court in March 1986 to serve a life sentence for murder. Jackson attacked his victim, 29-year-old mother-of-three Gillian Ellis, as she walked home from a party across a recreation ground in Burnley, Lancashire, in December, 1984.

After a week-long trial at Manchester Crown Court in 1986, the jury took two hours to find Jackson guilty of murder and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. In August, 1997, Jackson escaped from the medium-security Ranby Prison, near Nottingham. He went on the run for three days and made his way back to Lancashire, giving himself up in the town of Nelson.
