Homeland Secretary Johnson to speak at Duke

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson will speak about threats at home and abroad at Duke University on Thursday evening, three days before the 15th anniversary of the Sept.

11 terrorist attacks. Johnson is the fourth secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, which was created in 2002 in response to the terrorist attacks the year before. The department brought together agencies responsible for homeland security, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Secret Service. Johnson will speak in Fleishman Commons at the Sanford School of Public Policy.

Jeh Johnson has had a seat at the table in the key decisions about U.S.

security policy over the past seven and a half years, said David Schanzer, a Sanford School professor and director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security. Schanzer will lead the discussion with Johnson. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the Sanford School lot or the Science Drive visitor lot.
