CCTV Workers Will Strike On Weekend Of Old Firm Clash

Strike: CCTV workers will take industrial action on weekend of Celtic v Rangers at Celtic Park.

CCTV workers in Glasgow will go on strike on the weekend of the first Old Firm match of the season.

Around 140 members of staff at Community Safety Glasgow (CSG), an arms-length company of Glasgow City Council, will take the industrial action next weekend. The strike by members of three trade unions will coincide with the first Old Frim game of season at Celtic Park in the east end of the city next Saturday. They are striking over a dispute about the level of shift payments that CSG are intending to make under a new pay scheme.

Unison says CSG is trying to pay workers less than other staff in Glasgow City Council for working night shift and at the weekend. The workers do a range of jobs and include CCTV operators, advocacy workers, community payback workers, community enforcement officers, community enhancement workers and security officers. A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said the event would be “policed appropriately”.

Brian Smith, Unison Glasgow Branch secretary, said: “The trade unions believe that the payment levels are far too low compared to those in other parts of the Glasgow City Council family.

“For example, the night shift payment in the council is almost double that which CSG intend to pay.

“The trade unions do not believe that the proposed payments adequately compensate workers who undertake shifts and our members have been left with no option other than to take strike action.

“Some workers are facing a pay cut of 3000 per year. “

Community Safety Glasgow said it is hopeful of avoiding the industrial action. A spokesman added: “A pay review was undertaken at Community Safety Glasgow to ensure balance and fairness across all staff groups. The review delivered improved or identical pay for over 80% of staff.

“We are proposing pay protection at current rates for the next two years to allow time for matters to be resolved.

“Discussions are now on-going with the unions about the outcome of the review, which we hope will avert any strike action.”
