JERSEY CITY1 — A skateboarder who was struck by a Mister Softee ice cream truck in Union City remains in critical condition more than a week after the accident, Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari said.
On the night of Aug.
8, Union City police responded to Bergenline Avenue and 30th Street and found the 20-year-old North Bergen man unconscious on the street, Hudson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Juan P. Escobar said. Police say he had been riding a skateboard on the Bergenline Avenue sidewalk heading south when he entered the intersection and was struck by the Mister Softee truck, which was traveling east on 30th Street, Escobar said. The man was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center and underwent emergency surgery, but remains in critical condition and unconscious, Escobar said, adding that the victim was wearing earbuds at the time of the collision.
The 64-year-old ice cream truck driver remained at the scene and has not been charged.
Sheriff’s Office crash investigators believe the truck had the right of way, but they are continuing to review evidence, which includes security video from businesses in the area, Escobar said.
