Celtic fans to get increased security for Europa League Ajax match

Extra security will be put in place for Celtic fans in Amsterdam for the club’s Europa League clash with Ajax.

The two sides will meet in the city on September 17 for the first time since 2013, when violence between rival fans and police led to a number of arrests.

The club has announced a secure Celtic fans area will be set up in the Dam Square with safety fences and controlled access in place.

The square was the scene of much of the violence around the previous tie in 2013.

Eight officers were injured as fans clashed before a Champions League match between the sides .

Police said supporters armed with bottles and sticks fought in the square.

A group of Celtic supporters were also attacked in a pub by a large group of rival fans the night before the match.

Celtic said Dutch police would place “an extra emphasis” on providing increased security and protection for fans.

The club said the sale and consumption of alcohol would be controlled around the square and urged supporters to follow the advice of police at all times.
