A MAN is in a critical condition in hospital after being rescued from the 13th floor of a burning building. Firefighters pulled him from the blaze in a block of flats in Montague Street, Brighton, shortly after 5pm on Saturday and he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital1.

Sussex Police2 said today the fire at the Essex Place building was not being treated as suspicious, with police and fire experts still investigating its cause. Ten fire engines, including from as far afield as Hailsham and Haywards Heath, attended the blaze after several 999 calls.

Councillor Warren Morgan3, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council4, said during the incident that senior councillors were being updated regularly and council officers were helping residents affected.

One resident of the block said two flats had been burned out and the smoke coming out was “unbelievable”.
