A security guard is in hospital with facial fractures after he was allegedly punched at a Sydney bar in the early hours of Australia Day.

Two men, both aged in their early 20s, have been arrested after they allegedly punched the bouncer at the bar at the intersection of Pitt and Liverpool streets about 3am on Tuesday.

The pair allegedly became involved in a scuffle with the bouncer after being refused entry to a bar room inside the premises due to overcrowding issues, police say.

A short time later the security guard was punched and fell to the floor.

The security guard was rushed to hospital and is being treated for multiple facial fractures and head injuries.

He is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The two men were arrested at the bar and are being questioned by police.

No charges have been laid.
