A ‘patient’ has overpowered a police officer and shot two people after holding a pair of scissors to a female doctor’s throat at a Sydney1 hospital.
The man was reportedly threatening a doctor with scissors at Nepean Hospital, in Kingswood, a south-west suburb of Sydney, when the police officer tried to apprehend him and a struggle broke out, just before 10.30pm on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old was able to grab the police officer’s gun during the scuffle and managed to turn the weapon on him and a nearby security guard, shooting them both once in the leg.

Mark Marion, whose wife is a nurse at the hospital, said that police took the man to the hospital for assessment earlier that night.
‘Police picked him up from Mount Druitt and released him into the care of the hospital,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.
‘He snapped when the doctors walked in and that is when the security guard and police officer wrestled with him.’
According to police, the officer suffered a gunshot wound to the upper leg, while the security guard was hit in the calf.

The officer has been taken into emergency surgery while the shooter has been detained by police
A witness told the Daily Telegraph2 that the shooter had been holding a pair of scissors to a female doctor’s neck when the officer and security guard attempted to throw him on a bed.
‘A guy was screaming and shouting and holding a knife to a woman’s throat, we couldn’t make out what he was saying,’ the man said.
‘Security came running and started evacuating the area .
A police officer came running in, he was overalls, and tried to calm the situation down.
He said another patient dragged the injured officer away from the scene after he was shot.

A critical incident team from North West Metropolitan Region will investigate the attack which took place at Napean Hospital, in Sydney’s south west
Both men are currently undergoing treatment at Nepean Hospital.
Mr Marion said the police man was immediately rushed into emergency surgery.
Their condition is not known at this time.
The 39-year-old man was arrested and is currently assisting police with inquiries.
A critical incident team from North West Metropolitan Region will investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
At least 13 police cars were dispatched to the area following reports of the shooting.
