Shoplifter throws bike at Northampton Aldi security guard to evade capture

A shoplifter used his mountain bike as a projectile weapon when a guard tried to thwart his bid to escape an Aldi store in Northampton.

A security guard had tried to detain the man at the supermarket in Harlestone Road at about noon on New Year s Eve for taking goods.

But as guard tried to stop the shoplifter, the thief threw his bicycle at him, injuring his leg.

The shoplifter then ran away in the direction of Sunderland Road, leaving his bike behind.

A police spokesperson said the thief was white, aged about 28, about 6ft with dark hair, which was long on top and short on the sides.

He was wearing a blue zip-up hooded top, a black jacket, black tracksuit bottoms and black trainers .

He was also carrying a black rucksack and a black and blue duffel bag.

Witnesses, or anyone who knows anything about this incident can call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
