Internet security can seem a distant, extraneous issue until it directly affects you, in the form of something like stolen credit card information or a photo that goes public when you didn t intend² it to.

For the founder of Austin, TX-based Neone³, the issue of security extends beyond merely shared photos: Movie studios that want to keep their production under wraps may want a closed system to store details about planned shoots; government agencies might need a closed system over which they can securely communicate through instant messages or otherwise. Because much of the private data shared on the web is stored or processed in some form on servers owned by a third-party such as Google or smaller administrators, consumers are expected to trust that everything is safe, says Neone founder Dave Glassco.

When you put your data through someone else s server, all you have is a promise that your data is secure, Glassco says. A promise that they re not going to let other people look at it.

A promise that your data hasn t been hacked.

Glassco and his team at Neone built a tool, called the Neobase, that is meant to alleviate concern about taking or sharing private data like videos or documents over a connected network. The Neobase is in essence a server that a person can keep at home, allowing him or her to store information like photos, videos, documents, and conversations in a private, secure server that only the owner can access, Glassco says.

Social media networks like Facebook and Google Plus have become multibillion dollar businesses, thanks in large part to the data the companies collect about users. Neone cites a Pew Research study from May that says only 9 percent of Americans believe they have a lot of control over how much information is collected about them.

Glassco, a Texas native who has a background working with servers and advocating for open source computing, founded the company in 2014.

The company has raised $7 million from private investors, including Glassco himself.

Neone installs an app on the Neobase that operates like a social network, allowing people with a Neobase to communicate and share things with other people who have a Neobase and those who don t. Last week, the startup made the product available⁴ for sale on its website. It costs $199.

Even though the user is sharing links to the data, it is secure because Neone allows for communication from the device through an encrypted virtual private network, a VPN, Glassco says.

Using this kind of network allows users to create a secure tunnel to another person, and selectively share links, photos, and other material with specific friends at the user s discretion, Glassco says.

After the Neone is set up, the owner can access the social network on a Neobase-specific browser to build a profile, upload photos, and share comments or thoughts, among other actions, much like a social media network. A Neobase owner can still share content with friends who don t have one yet, the company says.

This content never passes through a third party like Facebook or Google, the company wrote in a prepared statement. Neobase uses an encrypted, person-to-person, decentralized communications protocol to keep all content entirely safe from prying eyes.

Four men have been jailed for a string of daring ramraids included on the headquarters of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team to steal trophies worth 565,000.

Dramatic CCTV footage released by police shows the gang reversing through the front doors of the Red Bull offices in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, before smashing their way into the trophy cabinets.

Other CCTV shows them driving around a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Weybridge, Surrey, as well as forcing their way into a convenience store in Shinfield, Berkshire, and towing away an ATM.

They are also shown ramming their vehicle into another store in Twyford, Berkshire.

Jason Eastwood, 41, of Willow Crescent, Farnborough, Hampshire, received three years and four months after admitting being a conspirator and being involved in the last four offences.

Armed officers will be deployed at Wembley Stadium for England’s friendly match with France in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, the Metropolitan Police has said.

The international friendly is being played on Tuesday evening, just four days after the coordinated strikes across the French capital that saw 129 people murdered.

Fans have been told to expect an increased police presence at transport hubs and “in and around” the stadium, including armed officers.

Deputy assistant commander Peter Terry, from the Met’s Specialist Crime and Operations Command, said: “We’ve reassessed what security we think we need for tomorrow night’s occasion, which will of course be a fairly sombre occasion especially considering who we’re playing.”

Terry said no specific threat had been made against the match, but asked fans to be the police’s “eyes and ears”.

He urged supporters who noticed anything of concern to approach their nearest police officer, ring the counter-terrorism hotline or call 999.

Speaking outside Scotland Yard’s headquarters, Terry said: “We’ve assessed what happened in France and we’ve changed what the appearance of the security will look like tomorrow.

“People travelling to and from the ground will see additional police officers at transport modes, they will see additional police officers on the walk up Olympic Way to the stadium, and in and around the stadium they will see armed officers, which is something they wouldn’t normally see.

“I won’t say that’s the first time it’s been deployed at a football match, but you will see officers out on foot carrying firearms tomorrow night.”

There will be more police officers on horses and with dogs as part of the beefed up security operation, he added.

Police have asked fans to set off 30 to 40 minutes early as there will be extra searches at the stadium.

Terry said: “London and Paris are sister cities.

They are extremely diverse and dynamic cities.

They will not be cowed by the threat of terrorism.

“It’s extremely important we show support to the people of Paris, people we have the greatest sympathy with at this moment in time, and show people we will go about our daily business.”

The lyrics of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, will be displayed on the big screens so that all fans can join in the singing.

Wembley’s giant arch will shine in red, white and blue while the French flag and national slogan of ‘Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite’ will be shown displayed on LED screens on Wembley Way.

There will be a minute’s silence before kick-off and both teams will wear black armbands to remember the victims of Friday’s attacks.

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn said: “7.55pm is when the game will really begin as we show our solidarity with France.”

Kaspersky’s range of security products is a little bewildering at first: with Anti-Virus, Internet Security and Total Security all marketed alongside one another. Anti-Virus is the cheapest option at 30, but it doesn’t contain all the security features of Kaspersky’s more expensive products.

The anti-malware elements of Internet Security and Total Security are identical, so our Protection Scores apply to both. We’ll be evaluating Total Security for its extra features, but if you don’t feel you need them, Internet Security is a cheaper option with the same system-level protection.

Protection and Performance

Kaspersky was the only product on test that was able to achieve a perfect Protection Rating of 300, managing to effectively halt 100% of the attacks we threw at it.

Unlike most anti-virus software, which sometimes let a threat run before neutralising it, Kaspersky didn’t even let them get that far; all 100 threats were dealt with before running either through scanning of by preventing the offending file from being downloaded at all. Despite catching all of our malware, Kaspersky wasn’t at all onerous when it came to blocking legitimate software; allowing us to run all the programs we tried to install on our test PC.

Kaspersky’s system footprint is slightly larger than that of ESET Smart Security, with an overall system performance impact rating of 7%. This is partly down to its very large size: nearly 800MB on our test system.

If you’re on a cheap netbook with just 32GB of built-in storage, that could be a problem. Our test system also booted five seconds slower than it would have without any anti-virus installed; this was a couple of seconds slower than Norton and one second slower than ESET Smart Security. Overall, though, it’s a lightweight piece of software that shouldn’t cause any noticeable performance issues as you go about your day.

Extra features

Kaspersky Total Security is a fully-featured software package with a large array of extra tools to justify the subscription costs.

Kaspersky has spent a great deal of the last year building its brand around protecting families, and if you buy Total Security you’ll also get a licence for Safe Kids, Kaspersky’s separate parental controls application.

In Total Security itself, there are some simple parental control settings, including an adult website filter, adult software filter and settings that let you limit how long your child can browse on weekdays and weekends.

Away from parental controls, there are some useful diagnostic tools for keeping an eye on your PC. A Task Manager-like interface shows you CPU and RAM usage, while the network monitor provides a slightly more user-friendly view of your bandwidth usage totals than Windows’ own Resources Manager. There’s also a file shredder and a tool for creating a bootable rescue disk, which can scan your PC for malware before Windows boots, bypassing the craftiest malware that that hides itself or disables your anti-virus protection when Windows has booted.

There’s a Password Manager that integrates into Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Edge isn’t supported. You can also buy the Password Manager tool separately for 10.49 a year if you don’t have Total Security.

Remote management is also included, although it’s not particularly useful unless you have an Android device. The web-based interface lets you run scans and enable features on your Windows PC or laptop, but it doesn’t extend further than that.

If you install the Android app (see box) you can wipe your device remotely, take a snapshot with the front-facing camera, and sound an alarm if you think you might just have lost it down the back of a sofa cushion.

Kaspersky Total Security is the only security package on test here that was able to achieve both a perfect Protection and Legitimate Software score. That in itself is impressive, although with such stiff competition and such a high standard in this round of testing, there are fewer places to hide than usual. Kaspersky’s software has a small system footprint and is reasonably priced, too, and the included smartphone anti-theft tools are very good indeed.

If you use all the tools provided, it’s very good value.

Norfolk, Va. A woman was cited at Norfolk International Airport on Monday for trying to bring a loaded gun on an airplane. This is the second gun caught at Norfolk International Airport since Friday and the 15th that TSA officers have detected at Norfolk this year.

Transportation Security Administration officers detected the .380 caliber handgun as it passed along the X-ray machine s conveyor belt.

The gun was loaded with six rounds of ammunition, including one bullet in the chamber.

The woman, who is a resident of Amissville, Virginia, was cited on a state weapons charge.

The gun was confiscated by the Norfolk Airport Authority Police.

There was no impact to airport operations.

WASHINGTON — Nearly half of the nation’s governors have called on the U.S. to stop admitting Syrian refugees, most of them promising to do everything in their power to prevent them from entering their states.

The governors represent Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. All are Republicans except for Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, a Democrat.

While most pledged to block Syrian refugees from entering their states, Florida Gov.

Rick Scott said he doesn’t think he has the authority¹ to keep the federal government from resettling them. Hassan called for the U.S. to stop admitting Syrian refugees entirely, but her spokesman said she could not block their resettlement in New Hampshire.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin similarly said there should be a moratorium on admitting Syrian refugees but stopped short of saying her state would try to reject them.

All of the governors cited last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris, which the Islamic State, also called ISIS, took credit for. Authorities found a Syrian passport near one of the suicide bombers there, although it has yet to be confirmed² whether it belonged to the attacker, or whether it was stolen or a forgery.

French authorities said the mastermind³ of the attacks was a Belgian man.

The attacks set off a backlash against Syrian refugees. In Europe, Poland’s future minister for European affairs said the country⁴ will not implement the European Union’s refugee plan in light of the attacks in Paris. In the U.S., calls to limit refugee admissions have come mostly from Republicans — many of whom had expressed concerns about admitting Muslims from Syria in the first place.

The Obama administration plans to admit⁵ 10,000 Syrian refugees this fiscal year, all of whom will undergo security screenings that typically take 18 to 24 months.

Refugees go through more extensive screening than any other group, such as tourists, students and people who cross the border.

Republicans argue, though, that those screenings are not enough and terrorists will exploit the system. It’s not clear that governors can⁶ actually block certain types of refugees — if nothing else, it would likely prompt discrimination lawsuits, and refugees are allowed to move once they arrive in the U.S., so it would be difficult to stop them from moving to their states on their own. But the governors said they can and will keep those refugees out.

The State Department, which handles refugee resettlement, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether states have the ability to block a certain type of refugees.

New Jersey Gov.

Chris Christie, who is running for president, told conservative radio host⁷ Hugh Hewitt he wants to keep out Syrian refugees, even if they’re orphan children.

“The fact is that we need appropriate vetting, and I don t think orphans under five are being, you know, should be admitted into the United States at this point,” Christie said. “In the end, I don t trust this administration to effectively vet the people that they re asking us to take in. We need to put the safety and security of the American people first.”

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, another presidential candidate, issued an executive order on Monday authorizing his government “to utilize all lawful means” to block Syrian refugees from resettling in the state.

He also instructed and authorized state police “to utilize all lawful means to monitor and avert threats within the State of Louisiana” if notified of Syrian refugees already living in the state.

A third Republican presidential candidate, Ohio Gov.

John Kasich, wrote to the president⁸ on Monday asking him to stop sending Syrians to the state.

Hours after saying she supported allowing Syrian refugees to resettle in South Carolina, Gov. Nikki Haley flip-flopped and announced she had written to the government⁹ to say she does not want them.

In Michigan, where many Syrians have already resettled, Gov. Rick Snyder also said he would aim to keep refugees out of the country.¹⁰

“Michigan is a welcoming state and we are proud of our rich history of immigration,” Snyder said in a statement. “But our first priority is protecting the safety of our residents.”

Indiana Gov.

Mike Pence similarly played up the state’s traditional welcoming nature when saying Syrian refugees would be rejected. He said Monday that he was directing state agencies to stop admitting Syrian refugees “pending assurances from the federal government that proper security measures have been achieved.”

“Indiana has a long tradition of opening our arms and homes to refugees from around the world but, as governor, my first responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of all Hoosiers,” he said. “Unless and until the state of Indiana receives assurances that proper security measures are in place, this policy will remain in full force and effect.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday¹¹ he will “temporarily suspend” efforts to admit Syrian refugees, while also talking about the state and country’s “shared history of providing safe haven for those displaced by conflict.”

“We must find a way to balance our tradition as a state welcoming of refugees while ensuring the safety and security of our citizens,” he said.

Massachusetts Gov.

Charlie Baker, who previously said¹² he was open to helping resettle Syrians, now says he is “not interested.”

“I would say no as of right now,” he told reporters on Monday. “No, I m not interested in accepting refugees from Syria.”¹³

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory announced Monday¹⁴ that he is asking the government to stop sending Syrian refugees to his state. He said 59 Syrian refugees had been resettled there already and the state received too little information about them.

Texas Gov.

Greg Abbott sent President Barack Obama a letter telling him his state would not welcome Syrians and urging him to halt plans to admit more of them into the U.S. Abbott argued that any Syrian might be connected to terrorism.¹⁵

Idaho Gov. Butch Otter said in a statement that it makes no sense “to allow people into our country who have the avowed desire to harm our communities, our institutions and our people.” He said he would “use any legal means available” to block Syrian refugee resettlement in the state.

Wisconsin Gov.

Scott Walker joined the chorus on Monday afternoon.

“There may be those who will try to take advantage of the generosity of our country and the ability to move freely within our borders through this federal resettlement program, and we must ensure we are doing all we can to safeguard the security of Americans,” he said in a statement.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey took the most extreme approach — he announced he will¹⁶ oppose the resettlement of all refugees in his state, not just those from Syria.

Others were more moderate. Nevada Gov.

Brian Sandoval (R) said Monday he wants the White House to review how it screens refugees, but did not say he would try to block Syrians from his state.¹⁷

Some governors, including Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D), Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) and Washington Gov.

Jay Inslee (D), went in the opposite direction, affirming Monday they will welcome Syrian refugees.¹⁸¹⁹²⁰

“Our first priority remains the safety of our residents,” Hickenlooper said in a statement. “We will work with the federal government and Homeland Security to ensure the national verification processes for refugees are as stringent as possible. We can protect our security and provide a place where the world’s most vulnerable can rebuild their lives.”

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D) also said his state would continue to admit Syrian refugees.

But he will soon be replaced by incoming Gov. Matt Bevin (R), who said he would reject²¹ them.

Obama said Monday he remained committed to taking in Syrian refugees, but they must go through rigorous screening.

He said people must “remember that many of these refugees are the victims of terrorism themselves.”

“That’s what they’re fleeing,” he said during a press conference in Turkey. “Slamming the door in their faces would be a betrayal of our values. Our nations can welcome refugees who are desperately seeking safety and ensure our own security.

We can and must do both.”

Amid all the chaos and misery in the aftermath of the Paris terror attacks, some very important facts appear to have slipped most people s attention.

The incident at the football stadium, Stade de France, for example, should have been a hundred, perhaps a thousand times worse.

ISIS s¹ atrocious plan was for one suicide bomber to go inside with a ticket to the game and blow himself up among the 80,000 spectators including French President Francois Hollande – while another two waited outside to do the same as the terrified crowd fled into the streets.

It was only foiled because security guards frisked him at the entrance and spotted he was wearing a suicide vest.

80,000 spectators were at the football match in Paris Friday night – and a brave guard saved that site from being infinitely worse when he turned away a suicide bomber after spotting the vest

The bomber backed away and detonated himself.

This prompted his two fellow terrorists to activate their own suicide vests.

Crucially, none of them was inside the stadium.

Thus only one person other than the bombers was killed.

For this, we have the vigilant security guards to thank.

And what needs to be made very loudly and clearly public is this: that team of security guards who saved many more lives included Muslims.

We know this because one of them, a Muslim known only by his first name Zouheir, revealed the amazing story to the Wall Street Journal.

He himself was stationed just inside the stadium, by the players tunnel and near President Hollande and helped protect people when the bombs started going off.

Once I saw Hollande being evacuated, I knew it wasn t firecrackers, he said.

Those security guards outstanding alertness and courage stopped what could have been a massacre of 9/11 proportions or worse.

And they did so at great personal risk to themselves because ISIS don t give a damn who they kill; Muslim, Christian, Jew, Sikh, black, white, gay, straight, male, female, young, old.

In fact, it s believed a number of the dead and wounded in Paris were also Muslim.

Stade de France wasn t the only scene of heroism that night from people of Islam.

Another Muslim, a worker named Safer at the Cosa Nostra restaurant, saved the lives of two injured women during Friday s attacks by risking his own to run out into the mayhem and bring them inside.

His valour echoed that of a Muslim named Lassana Bathily who saved numerous customers lives at a kosher grocery store during the January attacks in Paris by hiding them in a walk-in freezer.

Compare and contrast these heroic Muslims with that of millions of other Muslims after these latest outrages by terrorists purporting to be acting under specific murderous instruction from THEIR religion, and THEIR prophet.

All I m hearing right now is a lot of silence.

A loud, deafening silence.

As memorials spread and the world weeps there is nothing but a loud deafening silence from the vast majority of Muslims around the world . It’s not acceptable

An unforgivable, cowardly silence.

As the non-Muslim world rages and weeps, the vast majority of Muslims appear content to keep their heads down and say nothing .

Either out of genuine fear, or, if one was being less generous, out of tacit support for what ISIS stand for.

It has been the same after every single ISIS rampage, from the Charlie Hebdo slaughter to the Tunisia beach massacre and recent downing of a Russian passenger plane.

And I m sorry but it s just not acceptable any more.

I m a Catholic and if a load of other Catholics suddenly started beheading and shooting people in the name of my religion in this modern age, falsely claiming papal authority to do so, I would stand up and denounce them from any rooftops I could find.

As would, I am sure, millions of other Catholics.

There would be shared revulsion at the way our religion was being hijacked to justify mass murder.

Only when the wider Muslim population turns on ISIS properly in their own communities, renounces everything they stand for, and roots them out, will they be finished off.

It s pretty clear now that they cannot be beaten by Western bombs alone, although that will certainly help.

President Obama admitted as much today when he made yet another weasly, non-committal speech promising to do very little more about the biggest current threat to America and the world s security.

He s led from behind throughout the mounting turmoil in the Middle East and it s been pathetic to watch.

Today, he seemed almost impotent about how to deal with the crisis, which is hardly surprising given his infamous failure to act when Syrian dictator President Assad used chemical weapons, thus crossing Obama s supposed red line and calling his bluff.

In fact, Obama seemed more exercised about the Republican party s response to ISIS than about what to actually do about ISIS; putting cheap political point-scoring ahead of the national and global interest.

In one laughably deluded moment he actually said: If there s a good idea out there, then we re going to do it . I don t think I ve shown a hesitation to act.

Well yes, Mr President, that s exactly what you ve shown.

The truth is that Obama s done nothing of any significance or effectiveness to stem the inexorable rise of ISIS other than lob up a few drones over Syria from thousands of miles away and commit a handful of special forces troops on the ground.

And his irritable insistence that he never underestimated ISIS is contracted by his own damning words when he called them a JV team two years ago.

No wonder these extremists feel so emboldened.

But their real strength lies not in Obama s shameful inaction but the equally shameful inaction of many of their fellow Muslims.

ISIS have terrorised many of them into supine lack of resistance, which is perhaps understandable in places like Iraq and Syria given the barbarity of their violence.

What is not understandable, nor acceptable, is the spinelessness from Muslims living outside the war zones.

They need to find a voice, and their feet, and get out of their homes to protest about what ISIS is doing.

I want to see Muslim anti-ISIS marches, Muslim anti-ISIS conferences, Muslim anti-ISIS rallies.

I want to hear that Muslim clerics have denounced ISIS in mosques to congregations of young impressionable people.

I want social media to blow up with furious Muslims attacking ISIS, with the same velocity deployed by those callous suicide bombers.

I ve said many times that ISIS are not real Muslims and been mocked for it.

But they re not.

As the Paris hero restaurant worker Safer said: This has nothing to do with religion .

Real Muslims are not made for killing people, these are criminals.

He s right .

They re just medieval gangsters who ve stolen a religion and abused its true meaning to wage a new world war.

I believe most Muslims are decent, law-abiding and peaceful and hate what ISIS are doing.

I just can t hear or see enough of them say it.

It s time for them to show the same courage that the likes of Safer, Lassana and Zouheir and his colleagues showed.

Real Muslims of the world, regain your voice, reclaim your religion and help save all of our lives.

As an exercise in stating the obvious, it is hard to fault the G20 meeting in Turkey . Terrorism, world leaders concluded, is not only a threat to peace and security, it also does economic harm . Terrorists should find it harder to cross borders and to raise money .

Countries with information about terrorists should share it more readily.

This blandness is striking given that barely hours before the meeting convened, terrorism claimed scores of lives in Paris, Beirut and Baghdad.¹ Those murders were committed in the name of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant . Yet world leaders had next to nothing to say about what should be done to put an end to Isil s crimes, many of which are orchestrated from the territory it holds in Syria.

As David Cameron acknowledged, that is largely because of the gulf of opinion between the West and Russia over the future of Syria s egregious president, Bashar al-Assad .

That he is a murderous dictator is beyond doubt . But equally clear is that while leaders debate if, when, and how he should leave office, decisive action against Isil is delayed.

Much attention focuses on the use of air power against Isil, but more thought should be given to ground operations . That need not mean Western or Russian boots on the ground .

Better to bolster regional forces . It would be good for Muslim nations near Syria to do more about Isil (especially since the majority of its victims are Muslims), but realistically this means the stateless Kurds, who have recently reclaimed ground from Isil in Iraq and are pressing the militants in Syria.

Helping the Kurds would antagonise both Turkey and Iraq, who strongly oppose Kurdish independence . Trying to resolve that impasse is surely deserving of greater international diplomatic effort, and might usefully be considered by the United Nations Security Council meeting President Francois Hollande of France has requested to discuss the atrocity in Paris.

Of course, there are always limits to what international bodies can do .

National security is primarily the job of national governments . Here, it is worth scrutinising the response of Britain s politicians to events in Paris . Those responses have so far been familiar, all sides rehearsing the arguments about Syrian intervention and state surveillance they made before the atrocity.²

Jeremy Corbyn in particular appears both callously unmoved by the bloodshed in Paris, and negligently dismissive of the threat to Britain and the responses required .

Conservative ministers, wary of offering knee-jerk responses, have carefully stuck to their pre-Paris script; Mr Cameron, wary of defeat, still hesitates before asking MPs to vote on Syrian intervention.

Events in Paris demand a wider British debate about security . We should ask how and if our response would have differed had the attacks taken place here . Notwithstanding big differences between Britain and France on counter-terrorism and community relations (comparisons largely in Britain s favour) that is far from impossible to imagine .

Consequently, we should think more broadly about our response to Islamist extremism.

Many of those who commit terrorism (or attempt to) are citizens of European nations who travel to Isil territory for training . Current views of international law prevent countries such as Britain rendering such people stateless by removing their passports, meaning they are free to return to the countries they seek to harm . The legal consensus here should be challenged to allow their exclusion.

Spending decisions should also be reassessed .

More money for intelligence agencies is welcome, but what about cuts that reduce police manpower ? Is there more scope for using the skills of Britain s Armed Forces against domestic threats?

And what about Islam ? Theresa May told MPs recent attacks have nothing do with Islam .

Creditably, she wishes to avoid inflaming social tension .

But the relationship between Islam and terrorism must be discussed more fully than her position allows.

So far, responses to Paris, both international and national, have been wearily familiar, following the pattern of earlier atrocities .

Without bolder thinking, it is a pattern we may well repeat again.

The United Nations said on Monday it plans to redeploy some 300 peacekeepers to Central African Republic from a U.N. mission in Ivory Coast in a bid to boost security ahead of the country’s planned December elections and a visit by Pope Francis. The Senegalese troops from the U.N.

quick reaction force in Ivory Coast would be redeployed as soon as possible for about eight weeks “in light of the ongoing tense security situation,” said U.N.

spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

A teenager has been charged with murder after the body of a woman was found in a house.

The police said they received information at 7.23am on Monday which caused concern for a woman in Edendale Avenue, Blyth, Northumberland.

Officers attended along with other emergency services and a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result a 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court later.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Inquiries into the murder are ongoing and anyone with any information that could help with inquiries is asked to contact police.”

As Labour discovered in the 1980s, national security is a baseline question voters look at before deciding whether a party and a potential Prime Minister are fit for office. If the electorate does not believe you will protect them as well as possible from overseas and terrorist threats, they won t even get as far as looking at your domestic, economic and social policies. Robustness on defence and security is a characteristic both of the swing voters who decide elections and of a large chunk of Labour s traditional working class core support, who want economic redistribution and well-funded public services but also leaders who they can trust to defend the country s security.

The Paris attacks have pushed national security back to the centre of the political agenda and sadly Jeremy Corbyn s response has not hit a tone that will be acceptable to many voters.

He needed to totally disassociate himself from the Stop the War Coalition (which he used to chair) after their appalling victim-blaming initial statement that Paris reaps whirlwind of western support for extremist violence in Middle East (even though France opposed the Iraq War).

Now would be a good time for Jeremy to say I am proud of my involvement in Stop the War s campaigning against the Iraq War but they have lost their moral compass and I no longer support them .

On the drone strike against Jihadi John his position seemed muddled as he tried to square the obvious benefits to humanity of the death of an evil murderer with his own opposition to the use of drones. Jeremy said It appears Mohammed Emwazi has been held to account for his callous and brutal crimes, however, it would have been far better for us all if he had been held to account in a court of law.

It wasn t necessary for him to say the second part of the formulation, even if he believed it, and rather than straight talking it will come across to ordinary people as mealy mouthed, and just a weird reaction to something most people will see in very straight-forward terms as a triumph for British and US security forces and for good over evil, as well as completely naive as it implies police action can be taken in a lawless war zone.

On the question of shoot to kill against terrorists his remarks ( I m not happy with a shoot to kill policy, I think that can often be counter-productive ) will also just sound odd in the context of what happened in Paris. The only way to guarantee stopping someone firing a Kalashnikov or about to trigger a suicide belt is to shoot to kill them.

People working and living in our major cities know ISIS will have ambitions to mount this kind of attack in the UK and want to know our police will have the power to kill terrorists to save civilian lives.

Of course, there need to be all kinds of guidelines and rules of engagement to minimise the risk of another tragedy like the Juan Charles de Menezes shooting after 7/7, but they don t need the Leader of the Opposition to rehearse this degree of nuance or sound angst ridden about an obvious decision.

On the key question of whether the UK should join France and the USA in air strikes against ISIS in Syria, I m open-minded about whether it would help matters for us to participate. Jeremy Corbyn should be as well. He needs to use his new status as a Privy Councillor to ask for an appropriate level of briefing from military and security experts so he can make an informed decision based on their advice, not on his anti-war gut instinct.

He should also use his status as a fellow-leader of a socialist party to consult President Hollande about what support France expects from both the government and opposition in the UK.

My questions would be:

• Does RAF participation in air strikes add anything in terms of military capability that France and the USA can t already do?
• Will it help ISIS victims (presumably anything that kills ISIS fighters and degrades their stocks of ammunition, fuel and equipment takes pressure off the Kurds and Yazidis fighting them)?
• Is there something else that the UK could more usefully do (e.g. use of Special Forces on the ground)?
• Does France feel they need UK participation for diplomatic and moral reasons of solidarity and sharing of risk? (If I was Hollande I would feel it was iniquitous if pilots from the country that was the victim of Friday s attacks had to take all the burden and risk of responding to them).
• What damage will be done to the UK s status globally, with our closest allies the USA and France, and states in the Middle East, if we are seen as not prepared to involve ourselves in the military destruction of ISIS?

Corbyn s ambivalence when asked about the efficacy of French air strikes let alone UK ones looks pretty cheap. If you just offered France solidarity you can t hint that their military response to the deaths of 129 of their citizens isn t the right thing to do.

The current Labour formulation about the primacy of peace talks Jeremy has said the idea has to be surely a political settlement in Syria confuses and conflates two issues and two parts of a three-sided conflict.

Yes there probably does have to be a political settlement between the Asad regime and the moderate non-ISIS rebels. They have fought each other to a standstill, neither side can win, and the slaughter has to be stopped. But after that deal, they then have to unite to fight ISIS, with massive Russian and Western support.

There can t be a peace deal with ISIS for the simple reason that ISIS don t want peace, their entire strategy is predicated on religious beliefs around provoking the apocalypse.

They can only be dealt with by total military defeat, and even after that there will be years of counter-terrorism operations needed.

Given the complexities of all this, the massively changed situation compared to a week ago, and the genuine debate going on in the PLP, with Labour MPs not divided on traditional left-right lines (some of the main proponents of intervention are from the Soft Left and some of the main sceptics from the right), Jeremy s bald stance that there will not be a free vote and MPs will definitely be whipped to vote against UK military action is premature and unhelpful to party unity.

Jeremy needs to decide if he is serious about running for the job of being Prime Minister, which involves life and death decisions about whether to deploy armed force against terrorist attacks, whether to order drone strikes, whether to order the RAF to fly missions alongside our allies.

To be a viable candidate for PM, you either have to change gear politically and get serious about national security, or accept that voters won t even listen to your plans to improve the economy and public services.

Or if the comfort zone of the Stop the War Christmas Party and trite but empty slogans about peace is more to your liking, you need to return to that world and let someone serious do the top job.

Two men are being questioned over the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl in Leicestershire who has not been seen for five days.

Kayleigh Haywood, from Measham, was last seen at 6pm on Friday evening when she was dropped off outside Ibstock Community College and last spoke to her parents on Saturday morning, but has not been heard from since.

Two male suspects, aged 27 and 28, were arrested in the Coalville and Ibstock areas in connection with her disappearance.

Detectives searching for the teenager have turned their attention to two locations.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson confirmed that forensics teams and officers were combing “a park and house” for clues, but declined to give further details.

Launching an appeal for information Leicestershire Police’s head of crime, Detective Chief Superintendent David Sandall, urged anyone with information or sightings of the teenager to come forward “immediately”.

Speaking on Monday evening, he said: “Kayleigh, if you see this, I want you to know that you are not in trouble.

“The police and your family are concerned as they have not heard from you since Saturday morning and we just want to make sure you are okay.”

The teenager was described as being about 5ft 6ins, of medium build, with mousey coloured long hair.

Describing the investigation Mr Sandall said: “We have a dedicated team of officers carrying out enquiries to try and locate Kayleigh.

“It is now more than three days since she was last seen by her family and they, and us, are becoming increasingly concerned about her safety.

“You may have some information which doesn’t seem significant to you, but it could really help with our enquiries.

Vehicles have been targeted while drivers are parked up overnight along the A38 and in nearby car parks.

Lorries were raided earlier this month as drivers slept at locations including Barton Business Park, and laybys on the A38 at Barkers Lane, Swinfen and Lichfield Road in Barton-under-Needwood.

A Staffordshire Polcie spokesperson said: Increased high visibility patrols are now being carried out by officers during the hours of darkness at key locations.

This includes the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology to detect and intercept suspicious vehicles.

Lorry drivers themselves are encouraged to step up security on their vehicles and report any sign of suspicious persons and/or activity by calling Staffordshire Police on 101.

Alikhan, an openly devout Sunni Muslim, has openly participated in a Muslim Public Affairs Council fundraiser titled Be the Change, in order to support that organization s leadership-development programs which openly advocates for the Sharia Law takeover of the United States.

The open support for this Sharia Law intention to overthrow the U.S. government, on the part of an American citizen, is illegal. When such an advocate is a Federal employee in a sensitive position this person should disqualify one from holding sensitive positions within the government.

Obama Administration Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships, Eboo Patel

If you were on the FBI team vetting Presidential appointees, would you grant your seal of approval to the grandson of the Muslim Brotherhood s founder, Siraj Wahhaj, who was named as a co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and who has defended the convicted WTC bombers.

Well, somebody thought Eboo Patel, the man in question would make a splendid member of Obama s Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships.

Additionally, Patel, himself, spoke at a Muslim Students Association and ISNA Convention, while appearing on a panel, and also being partnered with Tariq Ramadan.

Ramadan is the grandson of Siraj Wahhaj, who was named as a possible co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and has defended the convicted WTC bombers. Wahhaj allegedly advocates for the Islamic takeover of America under the banner of Sharia Law.

Please allow me to impart a brief history lesson. The Muslim Brotherhood was created by the Nazis.

They killed American GI s in World War II. They are terrorists. They run guns, drugs and children for other terrorist organizations such as Hamas.

Hamas is also tied into the Mexican drug cartels.

When one has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, then one has ties to terrorists and this should automatically disqualify one to work for our government. If a President is guilty of appointing such people to high governmental positions, then that President should be impeached.

The oversight of the Muslim Brotherhood s international investments is one reason for the Obama administration s support of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to an Egyptian report citing the vice president of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, Tehani al-Gebali. Shoebat reported in May of 2014 that Malik Obama is the executive secretary of the Islamic Da wa Organization, or IDO, a group created by the Sudanese government, which is labeled as a terrorist state by the U.S.

State Department.

The establishment of President Obama s half brother as someone who has distinct terrorist ties was established in the Arab Spring back in 2011.

The notion went unchallenged but largely unreported in the MSM.

Even if they get the extra manpower and resources promised the Government has promised², Britain s intelligence and security services will be working at full stretch if they are to track the movements of the estimated 450 British jihadists who have returned from Syria.

In the aftermath of the Paris terror atrocities³, Ministers have been falling over themselves to reassure the public that Britain s security infrastructure will be properly funded and resourced to counter the mounting threat posed by Islamist fanatics radicalised in Syria . David Cameron has said the Government intends to recruit an extra 1,900 spies, while Chancellor George Osborne has announced⁴ significant increases in funding for the Special Forces and cyber security.

Just as happened during the Blair era, I suspect the Tories have mastered the art of announcing major funding increases which have, on closer inspection, already been made in previous statements . For it seems all this so-called new money for the intelligence and security services simply relates to the new 1.5 billion Joint Security Fund that Mr Osborne announced in his July emergency budget, which is to be divided between the competing claims of the Special Forces and the intelligence and security services.

But in these straightened times beggars cannot be choosers, even when it comes to something so fundamental as defending the realm from the malign designs of Islamist terror cells.

And given the sheer scale of the threat we face in particular from returning jihadists⁵ all the agencies involved in defending us from attack need all the resources they can get.

Apart from the 450 returning jihadists (more than 700 British passport holders are said to have travelled to Syria) it is estimated there is something in the region of 5,000 radicalised Muslims who are of interest to the British security services.

Not all of these are deemed to be a high risk, but they all need to be monitored .

And to make sure they do not fall off the intelligence radar, security officers have a sophisticated system for assessing how much of a risk each potential suspect poses . Low risk Islamist activists can generally be monitored by specialist counter-terrorist police units around the country . But at the top end, when security officials find themselves dealing with Islamists believed to be actively engaged in plotting acts of terrorism, it can require upwards of 100 specially-trained officers to mount a round-the-clock surveillance operation.

To give the security services their due, these tactics have so far achieved the desired effect of preventing serious attacks on the British mainland .

Downing Street says that as many as seven Isil-related attacks have been thwarted during the past year⁶ including one last month .

But with the number of returning British jihadists continuing to increase, there is clearly no room for complacency.

The precise staffing levels at MI6 and MI5 are never made public, but it is doubtful that they have readily available the 45,000 specialist officers more than half the current size of the British Army that would be required just to monitor the activities of all the British jihadists who have so far returned to these shores.

The answer to this dilemma, of course, is for the border agencies to be more proactive in spotting and detaining British citizens travelling to and from Syria in the cause of jihad .

The fact that they have only so far managed to confiscate a handful passports from British jihadists suggests there is enormous room for improvement in this critical area.

Promotion company Live Nation has announced that it will be stepping up security procedures following the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.At least 129 people were killed and around 350 are injured after a series of violent attacks in the French capital on Friday night (November 13). Music venue Le Bataclan was the worst hit, with 118 civilians killed during a shooting at an Eagles Of Death Metal concert.Following the tragic news, Live Nation – which runs numerous venues around the world and UK, including Manchester O2 Apollo and Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena – have issued a statement.The statement reads: “The safety and security of our shows, fans and venues continues to be our highest priority. Due to the recent events in Paris, and in an abundance of caution, we have implemented heightened security procedures globally.””However, because of the sensitive nature of these protocols, we cannot elaborate further on the specific details,” the company added.Several music industry figures have applauded the move while also acknowledging the difficulties faced.

Gary Bongiovanni, editor of live music industry magazine Pollstar, said: “It s only logical for major venues worldwide to have heightened security. But the truth is that there is only so much anyone can do to stop a wave of suicidal attackers.”Andy Hughes/NMEStaff from Le Bataclan recently issued their first statement following the terror attack at the venue. It begins with “no words sufficient to express the magnitude of our grief,” before adding: “Our thoughts are with the victims, the wounded and their relatives.”The statement then goes on to explain that people wishing to gather in front of the venue to pay their respects to the dead will not be able to, until after police have finished working on the site.Translated, the statement reads: “There are no words sufficient to express the magnitude of our grief.

Our thoughts are with the victims, the wounded and their relatives. You may want to gather together, unfortunately the authorities still need to work on site. We will keep you informed of when it will be posible to gather.

We thank you for your support, it touches us deeply.”Eagles Of Death Metal merchandise seller, Nick Alexander was the first Briton confirmed to have been killed in the attacks.

Mercury Records’ international product manager Thomas Ayad and Les InRocks reporter William B Decherf are also among the deceased.Musicians around the world have reacted with horror to the attacks, including those who have friends in the city and others who have performed at the Bataclan venue over the years.

Among the artists who have delivered messages are Taylor Swift, Pharrell Williams, Justin Bieber, Jared Leto, AC/DC, Sam Smith, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake and more.The likes of U2 and Foo Fighters have cancelled upcoming shows in Paris and elsewhere in Europe following the attacks.
