Ghostface Killah concert ends in ‘bloodbath’ after man attacks security guard on stage

A US rapper’s concert ended in a bloodbath in Stockholm, Sweden, after a man jumped on stage and attacked a member of security.

Ghostface Killah, one of the founding members of the Wu-Tan Clan1, and Killah Priest were performing at the Debaser Medis club on the island of S dermalm in central Stockholm in Wednesday night when the attack took place.

Witnesses described the man rushing the stage and slashing at the guard’s face.

One audience member told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet2: They invited a bunch of girls on to the stage to dance with them.

At the same time a guy came up who hurt a guard in the face.

The guard got a big cut, roughly from his temple to the jaw .

It was a bloodbath on stage .

The guard pressed a towel to his face and ran off stage.

They said at first everyone assumed it was part of the show but the crowd soon realised it wasn t when a member of the rappers entourage pushed them out of harm’s way.

The assailant was then overpowered by security staff outside and was held until the police arrived.

World news in pictures

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening, The Local reported.3

Police said he had been arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault but did not say what weapon the man had used to attack the guard with.

Police control room officer Pontus Sandulf told Aftonbladet: They say the weapon could have been anything from a shard of glass to a knife.

They say there was a lot of blood, but it is hard to say because I haven’t seen it myself.

Europe court dismisses claim Omagh bombing trial was ‘unfair’

29th September 2016, Europe Court Dismisses Claim Omagh Bombing Trial Was 'unfair' 0 comments

Europe’s top rights court on Thursday dismissed an attempt by two men held liable for the 1998 Omagh bombing, the worst atrocity of the Northern Ireland Troubles, to have the civil ruling against them overturned. No one has ever been convicted over the car bomb that ripped through the County Tyrone town on August 15, 1998, killing 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins. A civil case in 2009 held Michael McKevitt, founder of an Irish Republican Army (IRA) splinter group that claimed responsibility for the attack, and Liam Campbell liable for the carnage, along with two others.

The four men were ordered to pay damages of 1.6 million ($2.0 million, 1.8 million euros at today’s exchange rates) to the victims’ families. McKevitt and Campbell complained their trial was unfair, saying that, given the gravity of the accusations, the Belfast court should have applied a criminal rather than civil standard of proof. They also argued that admitting evidence from an FBI agent who had not been cross-examined in court was unjust.

The European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg dismissed their complaints, saying a civil case did not have to meet criminal standards and that the defendants had been given “adequate opportunity” to challenge the evidence from the FBI agent.

“In light of this, the Court found that the national court’s findings could not be said to have been arbitrary or unreasonable,” seven ECHR judges concluded in a unanimous ruling. The Omagh bombing rocked Northern Ireland, coming just four months after nationalist and unionist parties had inked a peace deal ending the worst of the violence that had plagued the British province for three decades. Two of the four men held liable for the attack — Seamus Daly and Colm Murphy — successfully had the ruling overturned and were ordered to face a retrial.

But their retrial ended with a similar finding of responsibility, with a Belfast High Court judge citing “overwhelming” evidence against them. In 2014, Daly became the first man to be charged over the attack. He was held in a high-security prison for nearly two years before being freed in March after the case against him collapsed.

Campbell and McKevitt, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence in Ireland for directing terrorism, have failed in all their attempts to have the civil finding of their responsibility overturned.

The ECHR’s ruling is final.

Jos Buttler talks about his new role as one-day captain for the tour of Bangladesh

Jos Buttler says he will look to continue Eoin Morgan’s good work when he stands in as England captain for the forthcoming tour of Bangladesh. Buttler will skipper the one-day team in three ODI’s, starting on October 7, in the absence of Morgan, who has chosen not to tour because of security concerns in the country.

England’s ODI side has been reborn since the disappointment of the World Cup last year with Buttler’s blistering form with the bat a vital component of their aggressive brand of cricket, and the wicketkeeper-batsman insists he will not stray too far from Morgan’s captaincy template.

“I’ll be calm but authoritative,” he told Sky Sports News HQ. “The important thing is for me to be genuine. I’m not going to try and be someone I’m not.

“I think I view the game in a very similar way to Eoin Morgan, I will try to be aggressive and I’ll ask the guys to play in the same way that we have been for 18 months because that’s been successful.

Buttler’s batting has been crucial to England’s success in the last year

“It’s a great honour to be named as captain for the tour. It’s going to be a great challenge for the side, we’ve created our own brand and we’ve been playing some good cricket.

“Going to Bangladesh in these conditions will present a new challenge, but we want to become the best one-day side in the world and push on and win the Champions Trophy next year and to do that you’ve got to be a side that can perform in all conditions.”

Morgan opted not to travel to Bangladesh because of security concerns

Morgan’s decision not to travel has led some to suggest he could lose the captaincy, but Buttler played down talk he could take the role on a permanent basis.

“It will be my first taste of it. Maybe down the line I would be interested in it, but at the moment I’m the stand-in for Eoin Morgan. He’s very much the captain of the England ODI team.

“The security is a big talking point. Personally I felt that once they said the tour was going ahead and having spoken at length to ECB head of security Reg Dickason, I trust him and was happy to travel.

“But it was an individual decision for everyone.

Everyone respects every decision that everyone has made as colleagues and friends.

“Once the cricket takes over and we’ve been there two or three days, that will slip into the background and we can concentrate on cricket.”

Angry Redditch residents demand answers about hospital downgrades in packed meeting

0
0

HUNDREDS of furious Redditch and Bromsgrove residents, including pensioners, mothers and campaigners, launched angry questions at the hospital trust responsible for downgrading the Alexandra Hospital. Bosses from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, joined by members of the Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group and staff, endured the session, chaired by borough council leader Bill Hartnett and Redditch MP Karen Lumley, at the town hall on Wednesday, September 28 to discuss the hospital’s future. Almost 500 residents turned up, many were forced to listen from the reception area due to the packed-out chamber, and about 1,500 people tuned in online via a live stream on campaigners Save The Alex’s Facebook page.

Health chiefs admitted they had let Redditch down- through their communication with the public- and new trust chairman Caragh Merrick promised to hold public engagement groups in the near future. Mrs Lumley, escorted by security, entered the town hall to a chorus of angry shouting from residents. When council leader Bill Hartnett made a opening statement to the crowd, an argument between councillors ensued as members said they had been told no councillors were allowed to speak- threatening the progression of the meeting.

This was swiftly ended when chairman of the Save the Alex Campaign Neal Stote said: “Councillors we’re hear to talk about the hospital”, leading to roaring clapping amongst the crowds. The panel spoke about a “countywide” service with investment at the Alex in certain areas but not in emergency services. Trust interim chief executive Chris Tidman said: “It is all about bring the services together.”

Residents explained their need for a return of both maternity, which closed in October last year, and children’s services, which was temporary closed earlier this month, both due to staffing levels, and their concerns in how they could travel the 18 miles to Worcester in an emergency.

The panel said they would be looking at investing in more ambulances and a bus service for residents. They also spoke about starting a recruitment drive to fill some of the vacancies. Dr Santi Vathenen, who resigned from the trust in June, described the trust of “systematic service stripping” at the Alexandra Hospital. He said: “You cannot now, in a modern setting, in a modern hospital have special things isolated. You cannot have acute medicine at the Alexandra Hospital without surgery, without maternity.

It might work in memory but not in practice.”

Penniless conman who bought two stately homes, a US mansion and racehorse stud farm jailed

0
0

A conman who bought a stately home near Bishop Auckland1 , a US mansion and a racehorse stud farm without a penny to his name has been jailed for six years. Aristocrats, banks and civic leaders were all duped into believing William Davenport, 60, was a multi-millionaire Beverly Hills-based toff with millions in the bank. The real-life Walter Mitty even persuaded Durham County Council to sell him the Grade II-listed home of a former Prime Minister, Windlestone Hall by posing as a member of the landed gentry.

In reality, he is in fact an ex-bricklayer whose real name is Bill Green who used fake identities to scam banks for loans while living hand to mouth on benefits. The fraudster was convicted over audacious multi-million-pound cons spanning both sides of the Atlantic on Wednesday. His web of lies began in January 2010 when he approached Sir John and Lady Pidgeon and offered to buy their Herefordshire property Great Brampton House for 1million.

He set up utility accounts centred on the manor to impress future victims and distance himself from past bankruptcies. Then he turned to the main aspect of his crime web the purchase of 30-bedroom Windlestone Hall, boyhood home of late Fifties Tory PM Sir Anthony Eden, near Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. Armed with his stately home address and false documents he contacted then owner Durham County Council in May 2011 and suckered it into selling him the 19th century manor for a cut-price 241,000 by claiming to have millions of pounds in offshore accounts.

Davenport, wife Ann and daughter Meaghan promised the council they would restore the house and its 25-acre grounds from a state of disrepair to their former glory. The serial conman later put the property on the market for 2.5million having done very little work to improve the building. Prosecutor Joanne Kidd told Teesside Crown Court2 : The Davenport family told the council they d take out an HSBC mortgage to cover the purchase and presented a letter purporting to be from the bank. It seemingly confirmed William received an annual salary of 430,000.

Having convinced the council to hand over legal title to the hall, Davenport defrauded the Barclays Bank branch in Bishop Auckland. He claimed to be an executive with a Beverly Hills firm which paid him the 430,000 a year. He then put 25,000 into his account each month but that money was a grant from the council to renovate the hall. By recycling the 25,000 grant every month it looked to the bank as if he really was being paid the vast salary he claimed.

Despite the 241,000 asking price, he persuaded Barclays to lend him 500,000. He used this to pay the council then deposited the remaining quarter of a million pounds in his HSBC account. After the success of that con, he made further mortgage applications all supported by fake P60s, PAYE numbers and the bogus bank statements showing his wages paid in.

Later in 2012 he applied for a 200,000 loan for Windlestone Hall, followed in 2014 by another for 704,464. In April 2013 Davenport had applied for a 1.5million mortgage to buy Ayton Castle in Eyemouth, Scotland, to convert it into a festival venue. His undoing came after he also claimed to be in talks to buy Otterburn Hall and the Percy Arms Hotel, both Northumberland.

Prosecutor Ms Kidd told the court: All good things must come to an end. An eagle-eyed Barclays underwriter noticed that a P60 did not match HMRC records and raised a query. Davenport was arrested at Windlestone Hall near Bishop Auckland in November 2014. The following month his wife and daughter said by the prosecution to be complicit in the scam fled jurisdiction and are now believed to be hiding in the US. The fraudulent mortgage applications totalled 2.9million, though the final two were discovered before they were paid out.

Davenport also bought a Newmarket stud farm, Middleston Hall, in Scotland, under false names as well as buying a mansion in Alabama in 2005 despite having no legal income. Ms Kidd said: Between 2008 and 2014, HMRC accounts confirm there is no record of any income or tax payment. The family, she went on, was living hand to mouth .

She added: The defendant claimed disability living allowance, which was paid into a post office account in the name of William Carrington. Defence counsel Josh Normanton said: This was not the cleverest of frauds. It took only the briefest touch by the authorities to send this house of cards collapsing. White-haired and bearded Davenport is now in a wheelchair after a horse-riding accident this year.

He appeared by video link from the nearby magistrates court and admitted three counts of fraud regarding four mortgage applications plus six of forging papers to support them. Judge Simon Bourne-Arton told him: You have county court judgments against you but you try to give the impression you are a man of stature. Your greedy eyes turned in 2011 to Windlestone Hall. This was a sophisticated fraud, well planned and well executed over a significant period.

You have been a thoroughly dishonest, greedy man. You have searched for a lifestyle without any means of paying for it. Though this is Davenport s first criminal conviction, a court in 2003 heard how he tricked his mother Terry, then 72, out of her life savings by falsely claiming he was in a 5million deal with Virgin tycoon Richard Branson .

He was ordered to repay her 120,000. Durham County Council said of the Windlestone Hall sale: The purchaser produced bank confirmation of the availability of funds to buy it. Security and running costs were about 100,000 a year, with maintenance of about 300,000 and renovation costs estimated at 3.7million.

Acceptance of the 241,000 offer was viewed as the best consideration reasonably obtainable to meet our obligations.

Sergeant Rob Pollard, of Durham Police, said: This real-life Walter Mitty clearly thought he was above the law but his lies unravelled after a complex investigation spanning more than two years.

Pisspoor IoT security means it’d be really easy to bump off pensioners

0
0

Two things are fixed on everyone’s minds when it comes to the Internet of Things: security and law. How does industry overcome the threats posed by these two hurdles? Speaking at yesterday’s Cambridge Wireless IoT event in London, Max Heinemeyer from Darktrace was all in favour of automating away the security problems. He advocated letting machine learning take the strain of countering IoT malware precursors to the gigantic botnet that floored infosec journalist Brian Krebs’ website1 earlier this week and the emerging threat of hijacks and botnets.

When I think about these new technology solutions, said Heinemeyer, I think what can save us from the IoT problem is to let machines do the heavy lifting. If you ve ever worked in a security operations centre with signature detection systems, it s not possible to keep them up to date manually.

I’ve told you about a problem, now here’s the solution

A former member of the Chaos Communications Club hacker collective in Germany, Heinemeyer was conveniently able to put forward a machine learning solution made by his employers which just so happens to be a solution to the IoT security problem. He emphasised how, once installed, it learns how the client s network operates over a period of two to three weeks and then act on unusual activity from there.

Earlier we heard of the DDoS attack against Brian Krebs with an IoT network. I jumped onto a client s network and it took me three minutes to find an IoT device trying to attack Krebs, said Heinemeyer, who identified the culprit device as a CCTV camera. Infamous security tools outfit Hacking Team was infiltrated by an IoT device modified to exploit a zero-day vulnerability, continued Heinemeyer, who gave a similar example of how one of Darktrace s customers was attacked: It wasn t an attacker from the internet. Someone used chodan.io to find a fingerprint scanner.

What he did then was guess the default admin password which was username admin, password admin got access to the administration toolkit, then used this to pivot into the main network. Regular Reg readers will recall how former Autonomy exec Mike Lynch is backing Darktrace2. HP bought Autonomy for $11bn in 2011 and later had to write down its value by $8.8bn, allegedly as a result of accounting malpractice overseen by Lynch. Lynch denies the claim and is defending an ongoing lawsuit3 brought by HP last year.

Killing pensioners, two keyboard taps at a time

Where does government and regulation fit in with the IoT, then? The 50-strong audience heard from Derek McAuley of the University of Nottingham, who left your correspondent with a vague sense of unease about the whole shebang.

We already live in a world where there s a massive amount of regulation, said McAuley. He quite correctly characterised a whole raft of companies from Facebook to Amazon to local cab firms as not technology companies per se, but rather companies that happen to use technology an important difference.

There will be regulation on IoT in certain spaces, he said. We actually have to look at the individual sectors and the Things within these sectors and say what regulation applies ?

Highlighting the US Federal Trade Commission s webpage4 on what to know about webcam hackers and talking about how the FTC cracked down on firms selling shonky webcams with little or no built-in security features, McAuley said: The regulation that was applied was nothing to do with technology, it was to do with consumer protection. Sanctions were applied and many of those companies shut down the next day. He continued on this theme, highlighting how real-world regulations already apply to the Internet of Things or rather, can be made to apply to it and warned that the biggest challenge may not be impending regulation or security challenges alone, but also user confidence.

Year on year, trust in companies use of our data is declining. Every time there s another crappy IoT device out there, this will only encourage this reduction in trust. We need a radical plan of action here and it s not just the IoT world.

As far as consumers are concerned, Someone’s doing shit with my data that I don t like. We only need some more Daily Mail incidents to cause real trouble, he declared, to general nods of agreement.

FUD? Not so much hyperbole masks a real problem here

Showing the audience a schematic of someone s connected house pulled randomly from the internet, complete with automatic garage doors, self-ordering fridge, the whole works, McAuley said: What could go wrong with that? The next slide was a news story titled Automatic garage door openers: hazards for children, and went on to explain a nasty incident where junior had got hold of a remote control and squashed himself in the garage door.

Unlike privacy, he said, you re not going to be able to get fuzzy at the edges here. There s one thing that s common across the whole world: if you kill children with your technology, people are going to get angry and they re going to come after you. If you really take it to extremes, McAuley pointed out, you could even leverage the IoT as a real-world attack vector.

What we re getting with the IoT is actuation in the real world. If I take a bunch of thermostats offline for 24 hours in the UK in winter, I ll probably kill a bunch of pensioners.

There s your cyber terrorism attack. Was all this a cynical doom-and-gloom look at the Internet of Things and its future? No, but it’s the things that need to be taken into account now. It’s all very well building smart kettles and self-ordering fridges and all that sort of guff, but unless industry bucks its ideas up and starts designing in security from the start, and paying proper attention to privacy instead of a 60-page EULA no bugger will read before clicking agree things, and Things, will get worse before they get better.

Will the new era of technology solve all our problems? No, but it helps, concluded Darktrace’s Heinemeyer.

Where is the best place to watch?

Everything You Need To Know About The Cardiff Half Marathon 2016

Running 13 miles is a real achievement and the support the runners get is hugely important but luckily there are plenty of places you can catch one or even two glimpses of your loved ones.

1. If you want to catch them again after the start

If you are there giving moral support at the start, and then want to catch them again later head across the city centre and watch them at the end of Lloyd George Avenue as they turn into Tyndall Street. This will be just before they hit the seven mile mark, but you only have to stroll for about half a mile.

2. Catching them on a couple of quieter spots

If you set yourself up on Penarth Road, near the Grangetown station, you will catch them shortly after the start, but far enough in so that they won’t be too bunched up and you may not be able to spot them in the crowd.

Everything You Need To Know About The Cardiff Half Marathon 2016

3. For a great photo opportunity

Cardiff is a pretty spectacular city, but if you head to Cardiff Bay you will be able to get a great landscape as the runners make their way across the Cardiff Bay Barrage. Lots of runners and a nice sea view, but it will be a bit like Where’s Wally trying to sport your loved one.

4. For a great individual photo opportunity

Head for between the five and six mile point, as the runners make their way through Cardiff Bay, which will offer the Norwegian Church, The Senedd and the Wales Millennium Centre to have in the background.

5. One spot, two viewings

If you plant yourself at end of Ninian Road you will be able to watch them as they start and finish their lap of Roath Park Lake. Plus this is near the end and they will going slower, easier to take a snap of them!

Everything You Need To Know About The Cardiff Half Marathon 2016

6. Start, halfway and the finish

If you want to see your runner start the race and finish and would like to catch them somewhere in between then you are in luck. The organisers have the route heading back past town between the seven and eight mile marks. So, you wave them off by the castle, head across the city to West Grove or Richmond Road, and after you have given your moral support, you can head back across town to the finish line.

Where will I get my commemorative T-shirt?

All runners will receive a commemorative t-shirt when they finish the race. There will be four sizes available (small, medium, large and extra large), so listen to organisers to ensure you get a T-shirt that fits.

Where can I eat after?

The organisers have arranged deals with a number of venues in the city centre that offer discounts for competitors. There is 10% off at The Grazing Shed4 and 30% at Mission Burrito. Go the official website www.cardiffhalfmarathon.co.uk5 for more details.

Former Mayor calls for urgent action on street lighting

0
0

A former Crewe & Nantwich mayor has joined a Cheshire East councillor in calls for urgent action on faulty power supplies that have left some Crewe residents without street lighting for over two months. Ray Stafford logged a call with Cheshire East Council on July 14 after a number of neighbours on Lea Avenue, Grange Close and Holmlea Drive alerted him to the nightly blackouts. Mr Stafford, who served as a Crewe councillor for 26 years and was mayor of the Crewe & Nantwich borough in 1998-99, is concerned that someone will be injured if the situation is not resolved.

He said: There are so many dangers associated with leaving residential areas in darkness. As a former councillor people come to me asking questions every day. They are worried.

I would class this as an emergency and I have made numerous calls to Cheshire East who have told me that they pass the details to the electricity company concerned.

Two vehicles arrived from Scottish Power after several weeks of waiting, and the workmen told us that they had changed a fuse somewhere.

That night even more lighting was not working.

I have become sadly disillusioned by the situation. Residents deserve better than this. Cheshire East Council maintains approximately 40,000 street lights and advises that it can take up to 25 working days to resolve a fault from the point of contact with the electricity provider, not from the date when the fault is reported.

Cheshire East Cllr Suzanne Brookfield, who represents the Crewe East area, believes that response times should be much quicker, especially when vulnerable residents are involved. She said: There was a similar issue last year around the Coronation Street area that affected a lot of elderly people in my ward. Accidents happen when people cannot see properly, especially where pavements are uneven.

I have now been advised that residents around the Lynbrook Drive area are also without lighting, so a large area of the estate near to Macon Meadows is now affected.

What worries me is that there are added security risks for the residents because of the open fields nearby.

I would urge anyone with concerns to contact me and I will attempt to get information from Scottish Power about when they expect to resolve this urgent issue.

Cllr Brookfield can be emailed using suzanne.brookfield@cheshireeast.gov.uk.

Fraud investigation underway after 11-plus exam leaked

0

Hundreds of girls will have to resit their 11-plus exams in Plymouth after it emerged many of them had seen the papers already. A fraud investigation is underway, after the City Council reported the leak to Devon and Cornwall Police. It’s thought it will affect 400 pupils who were trying to get a place at Plymouth High School for Girls and Devonport High School for Girls.

They sat a Maths and English exam on two consecutive weekends earlier this month – but immediately afterwards there were reports that some girls had been shown the test beforehand. With 240 places at stake, the council has taken the decision to resit both Maths and English tests on October 8th. The city council says its working closely with fraud investigators and has apologised to the pupils:

We regret to announce that due to a security breach, the candidates who sat the papers are going to have to re-sit them, and while we recognise that this is not ideal, it is the only way we can ensure the tests and admission process are carried out fairly.

Investigation into the source of the breach is ongoing. This is now being treated as a fraud investigation and a police matter so we are working closely with GL Assessment and fraud investigators, but we cannot comment further at this stage until the investigation is complete. We would once again like to thank all the children and their parents for their patience and understanding as we recognise this is a very difficult and frustrating situation.

These are the Welsh killers serving whole life sentences

Some crimes are so horrific it’s hard to imagine a punishment that fits. But the men who committed some of the most shocking murders in Welsh history have been jailed for their entire lives. Under British law, criminals who are given a whole-life tariffs instead of a life sentence are unlikely ever to be released as their offences are deemed too serious.

They cannot be released other than at the discretion of the justice secretary on compassionate grounds, for example if they are terminally ill or seriously incapacitated. In 2015, the European court ruled that the UK can impose the sentences1 after they previously deemed them a breach of human rights. Read on to see why these murderers have been handed the harshest of sentences.

Peter Moore

These Are The Welsh Killers Serving Whole Life Sentences Peter Moore murdered four men for sexual gratification in 1995

Cinema owner Peter Moore was the Man in Black who butchered Henry Roberts, Edward Carthy, Keith Randles and Tony Davies to satisfy his perverted sexual urges. He was dubbed the most dangerous man ever to set foot in Wales at his trial in 1996. Moore maintained the facade of a respectable business owner by day, but was a deplorable murderer who collected Nazi memorabilia by night.

Traffic safety manager Randles, 49, was stabbed by Moore as he slept in his caravan at Mona, Anglesey, in November 1995.

Moore told Randles as he attacked him that he was doing it for fun .

Jailing him, Mr Justice Maurice Kay said: At no stage have you shown the slightest remorse or regret for the killings. Nor for the 20 years of terror and violence that preceded them. I consider you to be as dangerous a man as it is possible to find.

I shall have to report to the Secretary of State, advising him of my view as to the earliest date that you should be considered for release.

I don t want you or anybody else to be in the slightest doubt as to what I shall say. In a word: Never.

The family of one of his victims was repulsed when Moore tried to overturn his whole-life sentence using European law3 in 2013. Edward Carthy s stepmother sister, Lynne Haygarth, said: He s not human anyway so he can t get out. No court will give him parole. He ll die in prison.”

Mark Bridger

The murder of schoolgirl April Jones4 revolted the nation in 2012.

Her killer, Mark Bridger, will die behind bars for kidnapping and murdering the five-year-old after his appeal to the European court was quashed in 2014.

The father-of-six snatched April near her home in Machynlleth, Powys, and her body has never been found.

The cottage where the murder is believed to have occurred was demolished in November 2014 as April s parents Paul and Coral Jones5 looked on.

Bridger demanded a move from HMP Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, in the same year after he was slashed across the face with a blade by fellow murderer.

The move was refused as were his demands for compensation.

He will spend the rest of his life in the prison, known as Monster Mansion , among the worst murderers, paedophiles and sexual predators in the country.

April s mother Coral said at the time: I hope he s threatened every day for the rest of his life. Every day I m suffering I ve got a lifetime of hell to live through.
Him wanting to be moved is disgusting. He did the crime now he s got to do the time.

David Morris was handed four life sentences after he brutally bludgeoned a family of women to death with a pole in South Wales worst mass murder.

Nurse Mandy Power, 34, her two young daughters Katie, 10, and Emily, eight, and her 80-year-old disabled mother Doris Dawson were horrifically killed in June 1999, in Clydach, near Swansea. Morris murdered Mrs Dawson as she lay in her bed before he lurked in wait for the rest of the family to return.

The Swansea builder was jailed for life for the second time in 2006 after a prior conviction was quashed.

But in 2014 a leading academic claimed to have found fresh DNA evidence on the murder weapon that called Morris guilt into question, which was is the subject of a fresh appeal to the Criminal Cases Review Comission7. Morris sister Debra Thomas said: My brother is applying to the CCRC because he s an innocent man.

He has always maintained his innocence and we have never doubted him.

We re not standing by my brother through blind faith or loyalty. We know he s not capable of committing such a crime and there is absolutely no evidence against him.

Matthew Hardman

Depraved Matthew Hardman stabbed 90-year-old Mabel Leyshon to death in a horrific vampire killing in November 2001, in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey.

He performed a gruesome ritual, cutting her heart out, placing it on a silver platter and then drinking her blood.

Hardman, who had been Mabel s paperboy, also placed pokers in the shape of a cross in front of her body.

He was just 17.

Hardman was obsessed with becoming a vampire and believed killing would help him achieve this.

A jury found him unanimously guilty after a two-week trial and the teenager was locked up for life.

Malcolm Green

These Are The Welsh Killers Serving Whole Life Sentences Double killer Malcolm Green

The Cardiff man was dubbed the “Body in the Bags” killer after he was handed a whole life sentence for his murder of New Zealander Clive Tully in 1991.

Clive’s torso, head and limbs were found in bags in Rogerstone and St Brides Wentlooge, the marshlands between Cardiff and Newport.

The victim was identified after a newspaper graphic artist produced a computer-enhanced photograph.

Green committed the grisly murder just two years after he had been released from another life term for the murder of a Cardiff prostitute in 1971.

The victim had also been cut up.

It was recommended that he serve a life sentence – but the Home Secretary gave him a whole life tarrif. It later emerged Green’s bloodlust and obsession with mutilation may have been triggered by seeing his younger brother decapitated by a train when he was just 12.

Other murderers serving life sentences in the UK

Around 70 prisoners have been issued with whole life tariffs in the UK since it was introduced in 1983, although some of them were convicted of their crimes before that date and some have since died in prison.

These Are The Welsh Killers Serving Whole Life Sentences Moors Murderer Ian Brady

Some of the most infamous prisoners believed to be serving whole life sentences include one of the Moors murderers, Ian Brady. Brady was convicted in May 1966 of murdering three children between 1963 and 1965. He and accomplice Myra Hindley later confessed to two more murders in1987.

They buried the bodies on Saddleworth Moor, near Manchester. Brady was convicted just six months after the abolition of the death penalty and is currently at Ashworth high security psychiatric hospital in Merseyside. The youngest person to be handed a life sentence is Jamie Reynolds, at the age of 23.

Reynolds murdered 17-year-old Georgia Williams after luring her to his parent’s home and taking photos of her body to keep as macabre trophies in Shropshire.

These Are The Welsh Killers Serving Whole Life Sentences Jamie Reynolds (right) who strangled Georgia Williams (left) and dumped her body in woodland before fleeing to Scotland.

He then dumped her body in Wrexham in 2013. Reynolds has appealed to the ECHR to overturn his sentence which is set to take place this year.

Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, will never be released from custody after his appeal was overruled and he was deemed fit to return to prison. The serial killer is currently in HM Prison Frankland in Durham for murdering 13 women.

These Are The Welsh Killers Serving Whole Life Sentences Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper

Sutcliffe claimed his murder spree, which took place between 1975 and 1980, was inspired by the voice of God who had told him to kill prostitutes. He was eventually caught after being arrested for driving false number plates. Triple murderer Arthur Hutchinson was the first prisoner in Britain to challenge his whole life sentence.

He gate crashed a wedding reception in Sheffield in 1983, killed the bride’s parents and brother and raped a teenage guest.

Hutchinson lost his appeal.

Banks tighten SWIFT system security after hacks

By Tom Bergin1 | GENEVA

GENEVA Banks are tightening the security of their SWIFT messaging networks used by the industry to shift trillions of dollars each day following revelations that hackers are increasingly able to get into this system to steal money.

Bankers at SWIFT’s annual SIBOS conference in Geneva said they were adopting new security tools, reviewing procedures and pressing their counterparties to do the same . Some banks are also looking at alternative technologies for transferring money, such as blockchain-type systems.

They are stepping up their efforts after the theft of $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank in February and revelations of other infiltration of banks SWIFT terminals . These hacks have undermined confidence in SWIFT messages, which were previously accepted at face value.

The attacks will continue and get more sophisticated, SWIFT Chief Executive Gottfried Leibbrandt warned delegates at the conference organized by SWIFT, which is a global member-owned cooperative.

Benoit Desserre, Global Head of Global Transaction Banking at France s Societe Generale, said his bank had already undertaken all of SWIFT s recommended security measures but that the hacks had encouraged it to go one step further.

The bank is introducing a new layer of security whereby the staff who are approved to send SWIFT payment instructions must now sign on with a fingerprint scanner . This is in addition to passwords and a physical computer key.

It was easier for us to make that investment knowing what has happened, he told Reuters in an interview. “It suddenly became more important to get something like that.

In time, SocGen may press its counterparties to use a similar system, only agreeing to fulfill payment instructions which carry a digital fingerprint, Desserre said . But he said cost could slow a broader roll-out of the technology.

FACEBOOK FRIENDS

In the wake of the hacks, the French bank also went through its SWIFT system to weed out redundant communications channels . SWIFT operates like Facebook in that members can only send messages to confirmed counterparties . But sometimes these links remain open even after business relationships end.

SWIFT s Chairman Yawar Shah told delegates at the conference that such open channels were a security risk and that all banks should weed out unused channels.

Desserre said Societe Generale had removed thousands.

Cheri McGuire, Chief Information Security Officer at Standard Chartered said her bank was also conducting an internal review around its SWIFT systems.

But banks are not just looking at their own systems.

The Bangladesh Bank heist involved diverting money held at accounts at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York into accounts in the Philippines.

Bankers said to avoid this happening in the future bigger banks needed to ensure the smaller banks they work with have appropriate security procedures.

Sergio Dalla Riva, Head of Product Development, Global Transaction Banking at Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A . said understanding the security capabilities of your clients was becoming part of customer due diligence.

Lev Khasis, Chief Operating Officer at Sberbank, Russia’s biggest bank by assets, said he expected regulators to tighten oversight of security practices but that peer pressure would also play a role.

Some big banks will be pushing their smaller counterparties to move in that direction, he said . Sberbank was already pushing its clients in this way, he said.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

The SWIFT hacks are also spurring interest in new technologies.

Lars Sjogren, Global Head of Transaction Banking at Danske Bank said his bank was working with technology companies to develop tools that would spot unusual and potentially fraudulent payment instructions sent via SWIFT.

Payments of a certain size by a customer to people they normally pay should be green-lighted . But others could be yellow or red-lighted . There is a huge demand from our customers for that kind of service, he said.

Others are looking at technologies which might one day replace the current SWIFT “FIN” message which banks send to tell another bank to move money around.

Blockchains are the most commonly touted alternative . These involve a publicly accessible ledger, which works as an electronic record-keeping and transaction-processing system and requires no third-party verification . The ledger can be checked at any time, helping to highlight fraudulent transfers.

On Wednesday, Sberbank joined the Hyperledger Project, which was formed by the Linux Foundation, a not for profit technology consortium, to develop new blockchain technologies for businesses . Khasis said such a system might be more secure than sending FIN messages.

SWIFT is also developing blockchain initiatives and its involvement could help to speed up the technology s adoption, David Treat, Blockchain Lead at consultants Accenture, said . Nonetheless, he said that governance and privacy challenges remained.

Mark Buitenhek, Global Head of Transaction Services at ING, said he was doubtful blockchain or other technologies were a silver bullet.

Fraud is a constant and fraud will remain there if we move to the next digital generation or not, he said.

Security to guard beached whale overnight

0
0

A security team has arrived at a beach in Devon to guard an eighteen metre-long dead whale. The giant mammal was beached at low tide at Langstone Cliff near Dawlish. Experts say the carcass, which is partially decomposed, is a finn whale – the second largest animal in the world. Fin whales are usually found in large numbers in the Bay of Biscay and their presence in British waters is a relatively new discovery.

Onlookers have been lining the sea wall taking pictures and watching coastguard and council officials deal with the carcass. It washed up ashore just after 8am and witnesses say the smell was pungent as soon as it hit the beach. Teignbridge District Council has been working on a plan to remove the whale by land. They’ve been forced to call in security overnight while they arrange contractors to take away the carcass – which could take up to 48 hours:

Moving the whale by land is going to be the most appropriate option and we are aiming to appoint a contractor to safely remove the carcass within the next 48 hours and take it to a licensed facility for disposal.

Security will be onsite overnight to make sure people are staying behind the cordon. It is a sad sight to see and we re committed to dealing with it in the most appropriate way. We would like to thank all our residents and visitors for their co-operation so far.

Home Security Windows Tech To Be Launched To The TradeGlazeAlarm

The revolutionary GlazeAlarm will be returning to this year s Glasstec exhibition in Dusseldorf to showcase the full production alarms and the prototype control system that Coderus has developed. The GlazeAlarm is a disruptive internet of things home automation security product that allows glazing manufacturers to compete in the security space for the first time. A patent-pending wireless, shock and humidity sensor system, the GlazeAlarm is installed within a double-glazed unit during manufacture and will notify the user immediately upon a breakage of the glass via an app on their chosen smart device.

It s this app that Coderus has been instrumental in developing. It will provide users with tools to select their safety, security and energy efficiency preferences, establish zones within their home or office and create personalised notification processes. It uses an embedded software design that enables the wireless network hub to communicate with detectors throughout the property to provide window monitoring for breakage, intrusion protection, temperature and environmental integrity.

Mark Thomas, CEO of Coderus said: Working with GlazeAlarm has proved to be an interesting project for us, utilising a wide range of our skills. It s another great example of how Coderus can provide full stack development for a joint embedded and mobile application. We look forward to being able to support the full launch of their innovative glazing security system in the coming months. Ian Branagan, CEO of GlazeAlarm said: The East of England is a great place for innovation and developments across many technologies. There are many exciting technological developments happening in Innovation Martlesham and Adastral Park, which is great to be part of. Thanks to Coderus s support we are able to provide customers with the technology they require to monitor their home or office security and energy efficiency remotely. Utilising the expertise of Coderus further highlights our commitment to innovation within the glazing and security industries.

How it works

The GlazeAlarm is a wireless-enabled sensor that is built into a double-glazed unit at the point of manufacture. The system gives home and business owners peace of mind that their property is safe and secure via cutting-edge sensor technology. In the event of a breakage, a local alarm will be triggered immediately and the user will be notified remotely via an app on their chosen smart device.

GlazeAlarm is the most robust and tamper-proof glass-break security solution available today with applications in both the residential and commercial sectors.

It allows users to manage the safety and security of their premises remotely and also provides manufacturers with constant live data on the integrity and performance of each and every one of their glazed units.

Shropshire Star comment: We must be ready for terrorist attacks

0
0

There should be a large, prominent anti-terrorism notice put up in Shropshire s police stations, fire stations, ambulance stations, military buildings, and so on. It should read: Today Is The Day.

The purpose would be psychological, to banish the thought that it can t happen here, and that it won t happen here today. Because if the threat is to be met effectively, the county has to be constantly on high alert. There are no days off in this battle. Terrorism has caused mayhem and destruction in this county in the past, and Shropshire was found wanting.

IRA terrorists succeeded in planting their bombs, and got away undetected. It was only by chance that nobody died.

A new breed of fanatical terrorists has the aim of killing as many innocent people as possible. Everything, and everyone, is a potential target. Across Europe, they have struck in big cities, but also in places which had no particular reason to think they would be on the receiving end. This is the class into which Shropshire falls. Security preparations are, for obvious reasons, mostly behind the scenes, but the public is entitled to take it as read that the police, Army, intelligence services, and other relevant agencies have already liaised about the possibility of a terrorist attack in Shropshire, and have made contingency plans. If they have not, and something happens, they will have let down the public through their lethal failure.

How much better, though, if attacks can be prevented. Here there is a two-pronged defence. One is detecting plots and thwarting them and the other is extracting the poisonous ideology which inspires people to become terrorists.

Next week Shropshire councillors will be discussing how best to implement the government s Prevent strategy, which aims to address extremism and radicalisation. A report going before councillors says terrorism is a low threat in this county, but warns against complacency, and says the highest risk is from a difficult-to-detect lone wolf. This sort of thing can have an effect on the young and impressionable.

There again some terrorists are university-educated, and have embraced the gun and bomb as a grotesque choice.

The strategy is one of a range of measures we can try to reduce the risk, but we should not fool ourselves into thinking it will prevent terrorism.
